The automatic transmission went to a 5-speed for the '02 model year.....its silky smooth. There were upgrades between the '01s and '02s that make them somewhat more different than those between an '00 and '01.
The V6 (not a genuine Saab engine) is smooth and has plenty of power, but, it also has a timinmg belt that needs to be changed a couple of times during its lifetime. The INLINE 4s (not a V4) use timing chains. That in and of itself is not meant to point out one is better than the other, however, the base LPT 4 has plenty of power and no timing belt to worry about.
Since you're in the city, stay away from the Aero and those 17" wheels. Even on Long Island, the potholes had an active mating season this winter and they can really chew up those wheels.
