Crude leftover philosphy..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What should be the Price for a "new" 2003 linear wagon, eric, Sat, 27 Mar 2004 10:40:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab does not make it easy to sell last years cars. They cut you a 10% allowance after November or so and then the dealer is left out in the cold as last years car, a 2003 in this case, becomes inelegible for any of the current lease, finance or incentive programs.
At one time there was a $7k incentive on that car. They may have captured that by "punching" the car, that is reporting it as sold, starting the warranty clock, and maybe even licensing the car. So that the car may be "new" in spirit, as in not having an individual owner, but techinically in many states a used car that has been licensed, as opposed to a demonstrator which may have lots more miles but has never been licensed.
Anyway if it has been "punched" that's a good thing because the dealer got the bigger incentive to help with the price. It may never be good enough. We can rationalize what the car should sell for reasonably compared to the equivalent 2004, but there's no direct carryover. The '04 Linear went down in price, but you can't get the toys, and the Arc is the same price as last years Linear but with lots more power and bigger brakes. You can consult the price guides like Edmunds, but that'll get you a price on a used car and punched or not, this car your describing still comes with the new car smell.
Likely a very genereous offer, comparing 04's and using the price guides will get the dealer laughing as in "You wanna' pay what? Are you crazy?". This reasonable, rational number is likely thousands and thousands below what the dealer owns the car for. It's nobody's fault, well maybe Saab's, but the dealer has to find an "Ass for that seat" as the crude old time car biz saying goes. The dealer won't sell it for a reasonable figure, they have to wait to find a buyer less educated about pricing, or a buyer who they are doing a huge favor for. Or perhaps a very couragous sales manager would sign his name to big time losing deal, nah...that'll never happen. They'll just wait until the find an "ass for that seat", there's one for every car, eventually. Better to try and wait for that to happen rather than take a big loser by being reasonable.
Get an '04, there's a $5k incentive plus another $500 bonus cash through the end of the month, or a $2k lease incentive and a super low rate plus the bonus cash.
