An SL rated motor oil changed on 3000 mile intervals will not gum up the works. What it will not do is protect the bearings as well as an ACEA A3/B3 (or A2/B2) oil will. Your 8V non-turbo produces barely more than half the same torque as your LPT 2.3, with the same size bearings. 10W30 conventional oil is perfectly suitable for your 8V non-turbo, but may fall short of protecting the 2.3t Trionic. If you prefer to keep the same 3,000 mile oil change interval and use conventional oil for economy, you may be better served, at least in mild to warm weather, with 15W40. This usually gets you into diesel oil, which is modestly more expensive than gasoline engine oil, but still way less than a full synthetic. An alternative is to use a quality full synthetic which meets ACEA A3/B3 at twice your current change interval. This will drive your total cost closer to what you're paying now (at the exense of your independent shop), it will not gum up the engine, and it will give better lubrication for the main bearings.
