o2 Sensor going bad?

Wife's 9-5 shows a bit of blakish smoke when you step on the the gas. Happened for the whole trip back from the zoo today. the taipipe has quite a bit of black soot so wondering if the o2 sensor is going bad and running the car a bit rich. No CEL to note but wondering if I'm on with this. What to look for and other ideas of what this could be. My guess is the o2 sensor but maybe it is something else. Any thoughts. The car has always had a little smoke out the tail but usually goes away once warmed up but today seemed to not go away even on a long trip. Seems to show when you step on it. MPG have stayed arounf 26-27 so not out of range totally.
