I did not have the tensioner fail, but almost.....
The local dealer replaced the timing belt under warranty and made no mention of replacing tensioner. My fault for not being more inquistive and alert, and trusting them to diagnose any potential problems. About 8k miles later, I began hearing an increasingly loud howl (bearing sound) from the engine compartment. To make a long story short, I had an independent shop replaced the tensioner pulley.
You don't have to replace the tensioner, but it's almost a guarantee it will need replacing before the next belt change. Save yourself the labor costs and get it done with the belt.
