Thanks to one and all on my question. I am interested in the Saab diesels mainly because they are more energy efficient (and offer lower CO2). In 2006 or 2007, the U.S. diesel fuel is supposed to be sulfur free, which should allow European diesel engines to be used without modification, especially given the tough emmissions requirements now coming in for diesels in Europe. The holy grail is to eliminate soot and cut Nitrous Oxides (which promote smog) to gasoline engine levels or below. I think the Europeans are very close to that. I think we'll see quite a few diesels (and diesel hybrids) in the US within five years.
As for power performance, I was happy with the power of my '69 V-4 96, and have no need for a rocket, especially if I have diesel torque.
