Hi Ken,
The difference is less than 5% in height above the rim and you lose some amount of contact patch - which also acts to absorb some of the punishment. I have manipulated air pressure in various tire/rim combinations that I have used on 17" fitments and have been able to protect rims and strike an acceptable balance between ride and handling. Low profile radials have a wide range of acceptable pressures - you may wish to experiment. They are susceptible to low pressure damage, but becasue they do not crown like the older bias ply or high profile radial tires, folks are tempted to over-inflate them. Remember too, high pressure can place rims at risk nearly as much as partially deflated tires. High pressure (38-42psi - some low profile tires set max inflation at 50psi) yields quick steering response and maximum cornering capacity - but places the rims at risk.
Good luck
eric
