>Power steering fluid is "CHF11S" - what the heck is this?
In 1997 or 1998, SAAB changed to "Pentosin CHF-11S" power steering fluid. Pentosin CHF-11S is a synthetic fluid with better cold and hot temperature characteristics. It is also used by Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. You can get Pentosin CHF-11S from the SAAB dealer (or Audi or BMW) or from some import car specialty stores. The Pentosin CHF-11S does not appear to be compatible with most other Power Steering fluids.
>Coolant is "Saab approved only" - is any qualty ethylene glycol coolant for aluminum engines ok? (I hope Saab doesn't use an exotic blend as my Audi does.)
Nothing special about SAAB coolant as far as I know. Any quality ethylene glycol coolant should be fine.
>Windshield washer fluid is "Saab fluid only" - why?
I have used 20/10 All-Season washer fluid for several years in my 1998 900SET with no problems at all. Don't see any reason to stay with SAAB washer fluid. Most washer fluids are simply a 20-40% methyl alcohol and 80-60% water mix, with maybe a shot of soap.
