it's not the filter, it's the nature of an A/C system. Every car does this, some more noticeably than others. You need to adopt a coupla practices to minimize this.

1. Run your A/C once every week or two, even if it's crazy cold outside.

2. When using A/C, about a minute before you reach your destination kick the system into ECON so it keeps blowing air out of the system.

3. If the smell is really that bad, you need to disinfect and deodorize your A/C system. Wurth makes a special spray, others have used Lysol or a mild solution of bleach and water. You need to get this stuff into the system by using the vents at the base of the windshield (on the outside of the car, that is). There is stuff growing in your system (mold, mildew) that is unrelated to the newness or cleanliness of the filter(s).

One theory is that, starting a few years ago, the non-Freon systems weren't as efficient but had to be made smaller to save weight, so they allow water to collect in the system. That sitting water is where the bad moldies grow. This is NOT a unique problem to Saab.
