The top most pulley is the one that seems to fail most often. It is also the easiest to change. The serpentine belt is scheduled to be replaced at 60,000 miles. You are not at that point yet, but your car is nearly 6 years old and the belt may be deteriorating with age.
I just replaced all three pulleys on my 2000 lpt with 107,000+ miles. The small top pulley had a distinct clicking sound when I spun it on my finger after removing it. The other two (tensioner and large center idler) both felt and sounded fine. IMHO the small top pulley should be replaced with each belt change - even though this is not in the service instructions.
I wouldn't drive the car either. Starting the engine will result in the belt being jammed tightly around something (probably the crankshaft pulley) if the belt is off the pulleys as you say but still in place. A real tough job to correct from other's postings.
You will have no water pump and no power steering if you start the car. Can your friend lend you a floor jack (or bring one with him) and replace the belt where your car is currently parked?
