I have the original Michilins about to come off my 2000 Aero (one died last week) with a bit over 30,000 miles on them. I run them at 40 psi. The wear is even across all 4. True steel belted radials do not wear excessively in the center at high inflation pressures. The steel cables adequately resist the stretching required to accomplish this. The center wear idea goes back to bias ply tires albeit it still applies to cheap radials.
As to inflation pressure and handling, I recall an article many years ago in Road & Track on this subject. Basically what it came down to was; the higher the inflation pressure, the better the handling. They cited showroom stock racers who always took the inflation pressure right up to the maximum recommended pressure for the tire for the best handling. R&T cited tread squirm as the reason for this. Basically the higher the pressure, the more the tread stayed where it was suppose to.
I would also note that friction equations have factors for the pressure applied and the coefficent of friction, but not the size of the contact patch. The area of the contact patch doesn't make any difference, larger contact patch, less pressure per square inch; small contact patch, higher pressure per square inch. In the end it all works out the same. Now I must admit that this is for hard and reasonably smooth surfaces which doesn't apply for tires and roads respectively but it is close enough for passenger cars and their tires.
