The A6 2.7biturbo is a fast good handling car, Ive never driven an alroad but it should be similar, and has the utility of the wagon body, and some nebulous off-road ability (Hmm Ill be taking a 45 grand luxury car up that mountain) as well as the real on road benefits of awd. If it wasnt for the garish black plastic around the wheel arches and bumpers and the hefty price tag Id have considered one over an aero wagon at the time.
The downside of the all-road is the huge complexity and unreliability of the thing. The biturbo A6 has many problems, and while the awd itself is proven there are 3 times as many whirling oily bits that might go wrong - and some of them like torsen diffs are ungodly expensive. The air suspension is also complex.
This is why the A6 2.7 (and allroad) were bottom among european cars in JD Powers 3 year reliabilty study, and the 9-5 was top.
For a new car owned for the warranty period and used for the average 10-12k a year, this matters not much, as long as the audi garage has nice loaner cars, not enterprise rent-a-cavaliers, but for a used car doing 40k a year with you paing all the bills youd be taking a big gamble.
