here is my take, after having a VW TDI for 100K miles...

I love my TDI. It has never left me stuck/stranded/whatever.
I have never been unable to find diesel. Most of the time, folsk in gas cars aren't looking for diesel, so how do they know it is there.
And VW TDI don't smell, smoke or sound like older diesels. Really, though, even an older, WELL maintained diesel won't smoke or smell bad. After break in (20K miles), my little TDI stared getting me about 60-65 mopg on the highway - over 800 miles to a tank!

FWIW, I am getting an 83 mercedes 300SD, with 280K miles, to restore and replace our 9-5 after the lease is up. Once you get used to the power characteristics of a diesel, they are hard to ignore.

My only reservation about the PD-TDI in the new Passats is the high sulfur level of our diesel, and its likelyhood to clog injectors.
