Norm - I recently traded in a '99 A6 Avant with 2.8 on a Saab 9-5 Estate. The Audi was dangerously slow at anything less than 85 mph! Only at full European/German autobahn full boil speeds did it have any life at all. I'll gladly give up quattro to have some hp, and my Saab isn't even an Aero. As Audi doesn't even offer the bi-turbo 2.7t in the Avant in this country, it's either Volvo or Saab if you want enough power in a wagon.
Plus, quattro is overrated. On the dry it means lifeless driving. In the wet, you have to drive like a complete hooligan to have any advantage over front drive. In the snow, they're great----until you have to put the brakes on, then the same laws of physics apply. I just put 225/45 17 Blizzaks on my 9-5, drove thru some weather over Vail pass this weekend and had zero traction problems.
