E-Codes is basicially the European standard for headlighs as opposed to the DOT (Department of Transportation) Codes we get in the U.S. and Canada. The are legal in 3 or 4 U.S. states including Washington, Oregon and a couple others I don't know. It is not likely that you will get a ticket when using them as there are few who know the difference or the law. Some have stated that they needed to switch the lenses back for vehicle inspections but that is the only reports I have seen of any trouble using them and there are quite a few contributers and lurkers on this board who have switched over.
E-Codes have a cut-off on low beam where there is better lighting below the cut-off the DOT lights and no light above. It is the high beams where the difference really shows up, they project light much further down the road than DOT codes.
I have used E-Codes on and off for 25 years and really appreciated the difference (I live in Washington so I have no legal worries). If you do go this way though, check out Daniel Sterns web site for aiming instructions and spend some time aiming them or they won't do you any good.
