The clay bar is one of four steps to taking good care of paint.

1. Wash the car thoroughly. I do it twice to get all the dirt off. Any dirt left on the car will scratch when the claying starts

2. Spray and clay. This gets off "bonded contaminants", stuff that has gotten so stuck to the paint that washing will not get it off. The before claying and after claying smoothness contrast is staggering.

3. Polish the paint. Either by hand or with a machine.

4. Seal all that beautiful shine with a good wax or sealant.

You definitely don't need to polish every time you wax but figure on once or twice a year.

You should clay the car every time you intend to wax it.

You should wax it before it stops beading water.

And you wash it when it is dirty or you can find the time. :)

And $100 extra for claying sounds high. Do it yourself. Now, $100 for a good hand polishing would be a bargain. ;)
