That's what I did, and it's fine now.
It doesn't make sense that the shock manufacturer should tell you not to use an impact wrench when there is no other way to tighten the nut without special tools.
In this case, the special tools do not exist. I called my dealer who quoted $138 for the tool as she also explained that it is no longer available. I called Koni, who suggested AutoZone. I called Autozone -they don't have anything, and couldn't figure out what I was talking about. I called Matco, to ask what size their universal shock mount tool handled. They couldn't tell me, and advised me to call Lisle Hand tools ( who's link had been posted here in an earlier thread) who they got them from. Lisle measured one and it turned out to be for a 9/16 in top nut -not 22mm.
Finally, I went ahead and did it the way most mechanics would -ignore the manufacturer's warning and use the impact wrench. My frame shop told me to make sure the shock was fully extended before using the impact wrench, so I removed the shock tower cover under the hood, reconnected the 3 mounting bolts, jacked the car up, and torqued the top nut down. Then I lowered the car, reinstalled the shock tower covers, and went for a test drive.
Everything's fine.
And, best of all...no left over parts.
