I think it's fair to say that Saabs have their share of problems. For cars of this complexity and sophistication, I'd say it's about average. There are cars with better reliability ratings, and some with worse.
OK, that was pretty lame. Yes, Saabs have some interesting failure modes. Probably the most annoying thing is that some of these problems seem to be repeated year after year. This is unlike other cars, where it seems that they fix problems after two-three years. However, those other cars also seem to produce new and exciting problems every two or three years. So maybe Saab's approach is to stick with the failures you know - it makes for a much shorter troubleshooting time.
A comprehensive extended warranty isn't a bad idea. Heck, I have one on a car not made by Saab. I did it purely to cotnrol costs, and I expect that I paid a little extra money to buy 'peace of mind.' I researched it, and made sure my local dealer (where I get work done) happily accepts it and knows the paperwork associated with it. I made sure it specifically calls out what it does and doesn't cover. So far, I haven't had to use it, as all repairs have either been under the original warranty, or recall/'dealer extended' warranties - "Ooopsie" repairs when the manufacturer discovers they have a design flaw, and want to stay ahead of offical recalls and class actions suits.
Two features I got in mine - first, it's transferrable for a small fee. I figured that would help with resale. Second, if I don't use the warranty, I can turn it in for a refund. So if I never need it, at 100K miles I can ask for my money back. Of course, the warranty company isn't dumb. This is an incentive for me to avoid making claims, in hopes that I'll get my money back. But I don't expect to use the warranty for a $50 part - it's for that $800 A/C compressor, or $1400 ABS pump.
