While picking up my Arc, the dealer and I got to talking about airbags. Since my last car was a 95 Volvo, where the passenger-side airbag come out from behind a plastic flap on the dash, he was able to show me first-hand how Saab airbags currently deploy...
We walked over to Service to see a victim of what appeared to me to be a minor front-ender. The incident had caused both front airbags to deploy. Rather than come out of some well-disguised flaps, the airbag now bursts through a quarter inch of very hard plastic! Likewise on the driver side, it just punches through the stuff.
Having been blessed with never having been involved in such an accident, I was quite impressed with the power that must launch these things...and also worried that, say, if it occured to someone while in mid-spoonful, the consequences could be, er, hard to swallow (sorry!).
