I don't know. I think the Olds is an even to higher class.

I find the design cleaner inside and out on the new Olds(I HATE the first gen.) than the 9-5, which my wife has one(2.3 LPT wagon w/ stick).

You Saabites might love the design, but I absolutely hate the lines on the inside of the 9-5... the dash is near ugly to me. The instrument panel looks cheap with the lack of surface depths and boring fonts that the Olds has. I'm not asking it to look like an Audi's dash, but the damn lines just don't flow well. I thought the materials were the same quality and craftsmenship. The Olds, being American, likes to take what I call the bloated design philosophy - everything overly thick and big(ex. chairs).

I give the 9-5 a 8 out of 10 on exterior looks. I'd give the Olds a 9... both relative to their own class. The wagon looks best from the rear, the rear quarter angle, and dead front... I hate the side view, because it has a particularly long overhang. The Olds looks good at all angles - a huge difference from the former Space Ghost design... yuk.

As far a handling... I must have a lemon, because my wife's wagon is damn near her father's Buick LeSabre as far as handling. I don't know where you guys can say it is better than the Olds. The ones I've driven in our company fleet feels alot tighter and firmer. I can live with the funky dash, but will soon have to buy some Aero suspension bits and bigger wheels to eliminate that near land-yacht feel. And the crazy curb weight doesn't help!! After we bought it, I found out it was heavier than the LeSabre... what the hell?!!!?!!? By a few hundred pounds!!! No wonder it leans like it does.

As far as power, they're equal to me. But the V-8... well, it's a V-8! My wife's 2.3 seems lethargic having to drag that ~3700lbs around. Even though the vast majority of torque is supposedly there at 2k rpm, you can't move unless you're around 4500 rpm. I just wish we bought the 2000 model instead of the '99, but we didn't like the wheels the 4 cylinder was getting for 2000. Now we have to ponder whether Saab will have a chip upgrade for '99s... crap!

Both good cars in their own right.
