When my 02 was new, I asked the dealer what I could do to stop the high pitched "whine" that I could hear most of the time, but not always. I suggested it was the fuel pump.
The tech pulled the rear seat up, and showed me the now silent fuel pump between the rear seats, in a round depression.
He said the noise was "normal" I said, sometimes it was so annoying that my 10 year old said, "Dad, what's that wierd noise?"
Under the car, it seemed to come from the rear more than the engine bay.
Once, when it was particularly loud, I crawled under the car and put my finger on the rounded stamping that the fuel pump sits in, and there was a distinct vibration in the center!!! The "tone" changed a bit when I pressed my finger harder.
I havent told the dealer about this yet, but sometimes the noise is quite rude. Other times, I go a few weeks without hearing it much.
I also noticed that if I move my head around in the cabin, there are spots that I hear it, and other spots where it is, seemingly, phased out. This suggests a pretty pure frequency-vs- a more broad frequency that I would think a pulley would produce.
Try the finger test under the fuel pump housing...could rule out the fuel pump as the culprit.
Also...the noise isn't really there until the engine is running. Simply turning the key on and firing up the fuel pump doesn't bring on the full sound.
Good luck!
