Tonight I was testing out my new 2 ton floor jack on my 04 Aero and I had a harrowing experience. The car slipped off of the jacking point and in turn temporarily bent the rocker panel at the front point. I managed to lower the jack quickly and I believe I avoided any major damage, but we'll see in the light of day tomorrow. I always use a hockey puck on the saddle to give me an extra inch of clearance and to keep painted surfaces(like the rocker away from a very large mettalic saddle on the floor jack), I had jacked the car with a similar jack before(more than once) with no ill effects and I always lined up the hockey puck with the what I thought was the frame member just underneath the rocker and just to the outside of the flange at teh jacking point. Guess what, taint nothing there, nada, empty, its hollow after about an inch or so. Apparently, I was always jacking the car with pressure applied to the plastic rocker and just that one inch of metal frame near the the jacking flange, but tonight I lined it up too far to the outside and all I was hitting was the rocker and the air underneath. So far the damage seems limited to ripping the 1 screw out of its eyelet where the front wheel well screws into the rocker. I was able to screw it back in and all looks normal except some rustproofing material had been scraped off the frame and the flange was bent a bit. I learned my lesson to read the manual more carefully, but something tells me, there is nothing there that would have helped me. I guess I was assuming there was frame running all along the rocker as it has in all my previous cars that had a plastic rocker.

Moral of the story; if you jack it, make sure you under that flange.
