pretty general question...I don't know what year you are looking at.
The 9-5 has been around awhile and most of the problems (i.e. 1999 models) have been proven to to be worked out. The 9-5 is rated one of the most reliable european models along with volvo v60, v70, and the bmw 3 series. That said, the reliablitiy rating is 'average' among all vehicles. All other european cars mercedes, vw, audi are rated less then average.
The current 9-5 model is swedish engineering through and through. The only remaining design with little if any GM input. Some regard it as the last of the 'true saabs'. Amazing design, its been critized as 'over engineered' but thats what we saabers love about it, and IF there are problems thats what we hate.
My advice... get into one and drive !
If relaibilty is a top concern avoid all european vehicles. That said...saab 9-5 is rated as one of lowest ownership costs among the european luxury (near-luxury) cars.
Hope this helps, best thing is to just drive... Happy Saabing!
Jeff
