Too many maybes...it wouldn't even remotely pay unless you did it yourself, even with a donor car you got for next to nothing.
Not to mention all the wiring...I'll bet the control units probably recognize each other (or their absence) and deal with it, but you're still talking an enormous amount of money getting them connected, or replacing the existing harness.
I'd not like the good 'ol days 30 years ago when you'd drop an auto in, adjust the kickdown cable, and go ;) There's control units and cooling hoses and that whole monster gearshift, maybe even different shafts.
Before going further, I'd get the linkage aligned and the fluid changed in the box. NG900 boxen (close ancestor of 9-5 5-speed) would sometimes exhibit reverse oddness because their factory linkages wore and bound...while the 9-5 linkage is a different design, it can still conceivably wear, bind, and fall out of adjustment with the high miles. Some dealers have told NG owners they need new boxes when it was a linkage problem.
It's a hunch, but good luck!
