Residuals/buyouts came down pretty substantially after the 2000-2001 period. Most of the 2000-2001 residual/buyouts are way too high, but that's been addressed. That means it's likely you won't be able to catch a break, and that the $16k you mentioned will be a good buy for you.
If Saab Financial, owing to the experiences of 2000-2001, purchased residual/buyout insurance then there absolutely won't be any reason to negotiate with you. Saab will get the difference between the actual auction value and the residual/buyout from the insurance company.
It changes from year to year and there's no crystal ball. It's constantly being re-evaluated.
