I met this guy after I won an auction for a SID dispay he was selling on ebay with a 100day warranty. He happened to be 2 towns away from me so I picked it up and chatted with him. He explained that he had owned a couple of 9-5's and got so tired of dealing with the bad ribbon cable, he decided to see what he could do. From what he said, he researched (called supplier, manufacturer, etc) in to the existing cable/connection and came to the conclusion that it was a very poor design (which we all know) and there was no good/consistant way to fix a broken one. So he said he designed an alternative connector that did not rely on the conductive epoxy that the orginal one does, yet fits into the same space and had a manufacturer make up a bunch on these connector. He then solders the connectors into bad SID units and turns around and resells them. He said his fix does the job.
Now after reading all of this, I bet your wondering how it works. I don't know, because he ended up selling me a working unmodified SID unit from a late model 9-5 with a 100 day warranty and I was satisfied (because now I could finally figure out what was causing the "check" light to come one, turned out I have a bad windshield fluid level indicator).
The guy seem to know what he was talking about, but you never know.
If you want I can dig through my emails and send it to you if you'd like.
Let me know.
