But you can but a OBDII reader for $50-$120 that'll tell you the powetrain codes. Many of the codes are consistent across makes. For the manufacturer-specific codes (plus a ton of diagrams, procedures, etc), you can get an AllData subscription ($29/yr), OR a copy of the Workshop Information System (WIS) OR I think Haynes and/or Bentley will be printing a Service Manual soon.
Cars used to tell you (~85-95 or so) but that was when there were like 8 major codes, now there's hundreds because it'll often not only tell you what failed, but how.
