by a failed hose in the PCV system. The fresh air intake is located immediately behind the engine and a failed hose will let internal engine gasses escape directly in front of the intake.
This is an easy D-I-Y repair or a relatively cheap Dealer repair. I panicked when it happened to me and took my car to my local Dealer - parts and labor for the fix was approximately $80. The labor charge was only 0.2 hours - 12 minutes! - the kit of parts was around $50.
Good idea to perform the entire PCV upgrade at this time too, I am assuming it has not yet been done since you are having this odor problem indicative of a failed hose. I don't know about the visible smoke issue, maybe it was simply condensation which was discharged by the HVAC system at the same time engine gasses were being admitted.
