I just had my turbo replaced. 2001 9-5 Waggon at 70000km. (I just got it so
it was on warranty)
I've been in contact with a specialist in turbo's here in Sweden and
the problem is the Garret G17 turbo combined with the crankhouse ventilation (PCV) problem.
This turbo exists in five (5) versions. My original was version 3. The turbo expert claims that the design of the turbo was changed in version 5 so it would be able to handle the larger axial forces that makes the seals go bad.
My new turbo is version 5 so I hope this will be my final (on so far only) replacement.
There have been reports of people that have not had any problems with their turbo even if they do not have version 5. As far as one can tell from the posts, these people are replacing the oil more frequently and are letting the turbo cool down for a longer period before turning off the car.
But as the specialist claims; The original turbo was not properly designed.
Perhaps one should not blame Saab for this, Garret made a poor design.
