A few days ago I posted a question as to why our 2000 9-5 (4 cylinder) check engine light was sporadically coming on during the cours of about 4 days. Since the posting the light has been off continuously for four days and the car continued to run normally.
Last night my wife called to report that the car stopped running and she was stranded (naturally in the middle of the busiest intersection in town) and that there was an awful odor coming from the engine compartment. As soon as she mentioned the odor (fried electrical components) I knew exactly what the problem was - the DI cassette. Fortunately she was only 5 minutes away and I had a spare DI cassette in the car's trunk. So, within a total of 10 minutes I was there and had the car running fine again with the spare DI cassette (absolutely the best $49 I've ever spent for a used auto part (thank you e-bay).
For the record, our 2000 9-5 has 34,000 miles on it and the spark plugs were changed at 12,000 miles and again at 30,000 miles. Unfortunately the car is all of two months out of warranty. I still intend to call my local dealer and see if SaabUSA will give me some type of a goodwill allowance towards a new DI cassette, given the low miles on the car, and the fact that I can prove that the spark plugs were changed.
So, as many fellow 9-5 owners have posted on this board - CARRY A SPARE DI CASSETTE IN YOUR TRUNK! You never know when you will be next!
