(Wow, quick replies! :)
The sport mode sure helps, but sometimes (I don't know if this simply depends on engine rpm and load, or if it's random) when I push down the throttle, the car appears to shift to gear 4 and the engine runs at 3000 rpm or so - I think it should shift to gear 3 for a while when going this slow. This usually happens when driving behind another car and then wanting to bypass it. Not a nice feeling when there's a truck coming towards you and the car accelerates sssslowwly.. (Of course, I have no real numbers whether shifting to gear 3 would do any good, but it FEELS worse when this "partial kickdown" happens.)
I think in the 9-3SS manual, it lists some conditions for true kickdown to happen and IIRC, the engine rpm value has to be low enough (below 2000 rpm or something like that) for kickdown to work. I wonder if there is some logic like this in the 2002 9-5 as well.
About the noise - I think I'll talk to the local Saab service person and ask for his opinion (I don't think there's another car like mine that I could try).
