The numbers will be smaller, but we have no reasonable way of knowing the number of lease-buyouts and outright purchases. I'm going to make the rough assumption that if twice the number of cars 'sold', then approximately twice the number of cars will come available.
The sales figures were gleaned from NINES magazine. Leases appear as sales.
This is all a somewhat feeble attempt to add some scientific method to the mystery of buying off-lease cars. Or at least peek behind the curtain that the dealer is trying to hold firmly closed. Right now there is a decent supply of used wagons - I'm seeing Certified Base/Linear '01's for $19.9K to about $22.5K, in the 40K mile range. That's asking prices. I'd like to think that there might be something to knock that price down a few $K - I'd like to find a decent one for $18K or so. So I fall back on basic economic theory and assume that if more cars went out the door in August of '01, then more 36 month lease cars will appear in August of '04, and with greater supply, prices will drop some. But then again, I may very well be the victim of wishful thinking.
