"the 4 speed could not take the high engine torque which is why the trannies break"
This is not true. Saab was shell shocked from all of the 9000 Aero automatic transmission failures which IMO is why they limited power on the 4 speed used in the 2000/2001 9-5 Aero. The 4 speed in the 9-5 was a completely different trans than in the 9000 and much more durable. Ask any Saab tech how many 9-5 automatic transmissions they have seen fail and they will not have many stories to tell (unlike sludge related engine failures). The newer 5 speed is a bit stronger if you plan to tune the engine over stock levels, has the extra gear and has the availability of paddle shifters on the wheel (although I believe this was not available until 2003) but the 4 speed in the 2001 will hold up just fine and is a very good transmission.
Back to the topic...Yes spending a little more for the 2002 is well worth it. I just went from a 2000 Aero to a 2003 Aero and the biggest improvements I noticed were in the handling and the seats which are much more comfortable and supportive. Strangely, the wholesale values of 2001 models and 2002 models are not much different in the black book wholesale guide. The big jumps were between 2000 to 2001 and 2002 to 2003. I don't know why but the odd numbered years are worth much more according to this guide.
