1999-2009 [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Well a long story made short, perhaps not.
I and my wife have found that the drone of the 97 Passat diesel has become very fatiging on long trips. Could be the Passat, could be us, does not matter. So I suggested that we should consider retiring the Passat.
Wife gets very exicited about a quite car and starts talking Lexus, which has a well deserved reputation of been 'tomb quiet'. But rear wheel drive will not get up the drive in the winter.
And infinity, BMW, others offer only interior auto dimming interior mirrors and you get nicked and dimed on all of the options, like you would really get a factory order! 4 wheel drives have sucky MPGs.
So she comes around to, yes lets look at Saab. There after about a week ago, the stories about mid July discounts start to bubble up here. So there is a benevolent god person somewhere looking out for me. In this region, $7500 off list for an Aero Wagon.
Well we have an Aero Wagon already.
Meanwhile, got to sell that Passat. 1999 with 153000 miles. Dealer will not touch it. Regonal brokers will not touch it. Local used car lots will not touch it. So I post on tdiclub.com that I can't pass on my Passat. I list the mods etc. I had an offer by phone in twenty minutes and we took an offer within 24 hours. Calls from California, Maryland, Iowa, Texas *2, Ohio and numerous emails from elsewhere. I hit the diesel head mother load. I could have sold 8 or 10 of these vehicles and made folks happy. That was all a head spinner.
So meanwhile at the dealer ship, we show up and wife looks at Sedans, nope does not want that, wants another wagon. Then wants Merlot or glacier blue, Aero wagon autobox. Only two in CA, $800 to ship and maybe the CA manager might not release. (hell, he might pay $800 to get the robin's egg blue Wagons off of his lot) But thats not working and the sold Merlot Aero wagon in the showroom does not look so good now in real life. So, hell, take the, (hear comes the hook), steel grey Aero wagon slush box for a spin. Wife saddles up the wagon and off we go. She has a real big sh*t eating grin on her face with the autobox, and it has get-go like a scared rabbit (sorry 5spd fans, its it true). So we are tooling along and I say, 'you like how this feels'... more grins. Then I say, can you see any paint from the drivers seat? She says 'No', and I say, well there you be. (a Canadianizm)
So Saturday we pick up a steel grey auto wagon to take home to be with my 03 steel grey wagon 5spd.
So there is a not so short story with a strange but happy ending.
