Could you hear your electric cooling fan engaging when the needle on the gauge reached the midpoint? If you have a charging problem, there may not be enough power to turn the fan... and of course it could be the relays or fuses for the fans too.
This happened to me with a 99GL once a long time ago.
I would have the electrical system checked, and also flush and replenish the coolant. It is not good to overheat it because some components boil off and are lost.If the coolant blend was old (more than three years) and was not optimal, it could flash boil at a lower operating temperature than expected.
The other thing that could cause this is independent of idling - if the head gasket has blown, hot engine gases will enter your coolant, and then it will continually boil over..
When you drive, you naturally have enough convection to cool the engine as you go, even at 30 Celsius
