Sounds like your caught between a private party price and a dealers ASKING price. One measurement of the CPO value just for the warranty part and ignoring the selection part, is the price of a competitve warranty to the CPO. Answer: the warranty all by itself is a $2-3k thing.
Not necessarily in every case, but the CPO car likely has a more rigorous selection process and more safeguards and remedies against unforseen things.
A private party car may be a gem, and a CPO car may be dog, there's no certainty. How savvy are you? But the CPO car has a leg up.
Negotiating for a car doesn't have to be acrimonious. If you like the CPO car except for the price, go haggle a little.
