We have 03 and 04 Aero wagons.

So what changed in one year?

Tire pressures for low vehicle loads and sane speeds are 36F35R. Same in both owner's manuals.

The 03 tire pressure sticker in the door jamb shows the same info.

The 04 sticker, only shows 43F42R. No reference to be only max load and highest speeds. So in the context of max loads and max speeds, it does agree with the two owners manuals. The 04 sticker does reference the tire size and load rating, where the 03 sticker did not list the load rating. Perhaps the motive to change sticker was revised to deal with that.

So folks will look at the door sticker as it is easier then digging out the owners manual. Then they will inflate to 43F42R all of the time. The end result is that in one model year, with no other changes, the tire pressures are effectively increased by 7PSI or 20%.

So is it just bureaucratic bungling? My mechanical tire guage, accuracy unknown, showed around 41 PSI on all tires on the 04. Higher pressures do have some merit for new vehciles to reduce flat spotting in transit and while sitting in dealer lots. However, the dealer new vehicle prep should be checking/adjusting the tires pressures as well.

The 04 does telegraph road surfaces very effectivly and the vehicle handles very well.

Anyone have any more insight into this?

Are higher pressures a ploy to get higher stated MPG ratings?

And I have to consider higher pressures perhaps for the 03?

We all have to consider such higher pressures for past model years as well?
