Liam: My current car is a 2002 Aero with about 66 K on the odometer, and last week I noticed that when backing up,I now had a FARK assist instead of PARK assist, so yes,a few pixels were not reporting for work, although it is now fine.My last 9-5, a 99 2.3,had a SID replaced, but not due to missing segments or display related troubles, but when the dealer was trying to hunt down the reasons for low mileage readings that were intermittant. Turned out not to be the SID, so that was one that gets charged off to dealer error.
I agree with you that the Japanese might have addressed this type of problem differently in the manufacturing and production phase of the business, but when it gets down tothe retail and consumer level, as far as I am concerned, they are ruthless.Even Lexus and Infinity, the premium branded versions of Toyota and Nissan, adhere strictly to warranty issues at the dealer and corporate level, and if you are a little over the limit, you generally are SOL.
Fact is,little Saab sells about 140K units a year, and does not have the same budget and clout with OEM vendors as do the big guys who manufacture things in the 500K and up range per model year. If you ever looked into the sources for some componentry in high end cars like Ferrari and Porsche, you would see my piont that once a design is committed to in small volumes,it is often hard to recapture the attention of the manufacturer who made the part, sincethey are now making other items in huge volume for the larger companies. This is an example of why a simple thing like getting an XM radio in a Saab takes four years, but in Honda, it might take four months. Bottom line: I think we just have to live with the SID that drops a few pixels and gain comfort in knowing that we get great mileage, have great power and brakes and safety, and overall quality.Yes,our dashboard display pixels do go south on us.I guess I can live with it.
PS Did you get your phone in OK Lou
