intermittent no starting, long cranking

Well, i first had the problem last Saturday, the car had been driven about 2 miles, stopped for an hour, then driven a short ways, and parked. It wouldn't start, long cranking, lots of juice in the battery and so on. Had my Dad look at it (former air force electirician), and he scared it into life just as I was considering switching the DI with my new spare.... zoom, it comes to life, and keeps running fine for the rest of the day, and then all this week, until tonight, when I had the same problem in the driveway (my wife went to start the car, and it was no go). After waiting five minutes, and jiggling a few wires(same as last Saturday!), including the one leading to the crank position sensor, I was about to call the tow truck to get me to the dealer, when I gave it one last try, and it started. I dropped it off at the dealer.

So I appeal to the collective wisdom of the board, 2.3 lpt, 83000km, about potential causes.... crank position sensor, blocked fuel line or filter, DI cassette??
new battery from January of this year (just before I bought it), no check engine lights have lit up, throttle body extension replaced two years ago. The car has been running well, with good mpg's and power during acceleration. It typically starts on the fifth turn, which I think is a bit long.....
