I recently ordered a 9-5 Linear Wagon through Saab's European Delivery program. We're going living in Norway for a year and buying the 9-5 seemed like a good transportation option.
I thought I had checked out all the tax and registration issues prior to purchase (for Norway, Sweden, and back in Illinois). I can drive the a foreign registered vehicle in Norway for a year without any import or registration fees; Sweden will register the vehicle for export for up to 12 months; Illinois won't charge me any sales tax if the vehicle is over three months old and I've been a non-resident for a year.
It all seemed to be working out ok, until I got my order confirmation packet from Saab. In two or three places in their literature they mention a six-month limit on Swedish export plates with no options for renewing the registration. This limit seems to be contradicted by the official Swedish export registration I filled out which had a box to check for the 12 month registration--I checked out the Swedish government web site and their current form and instructions clearly offer a 12-month export registration option. The Saab 6-month limit also seems inconsitent with Saab's IDS insurance policy that states the vehicle is only covered for as long as the Swedish export registration is valid--and Saab sold me ten months of insurance.
In my initial phone inquires with the Saabusa IDS representative before I made the purchase, she seemed to agree with me that since I would be using the vehicle in Norway the 12 month limit wouldn't be a problem. Since I recieve the order confirmation material, I've sent a couple of requests for clarification to the Saabusa IDS representative, but I haven't heard back yet.
Does anybody have any experience with IDS sales and this 6-month policy? I really don't want to arrive at Trollhatten to discover that I'll have to send the Saab back four months ahead of us. Registering the vehicle in Norway isn't an option, unless I want my $27,000 9-5 to turn into a $60,000 vehicle.
Thanks for your help.
