DI Cassette Question

I believe my DI Cassette is fried. Car turns over but won't start -- burning plastic smell and smoke coming from directly under the cassette at the end where it is connected. I ordered a new one but won't get it for a few days. In the meantime, I called a friend who warehouses & sells spare parts for imports. He happened to have a Black DI Cassette which he gave me to use. When I installed, I got exactly the same problem. No start, smoke, burning smell, etc. Does it sound like the used Cassette is bad also or does this indicate another problem? I have inspected the connector and I don't see any visible problems. Thanks for any help, Clay.
