"a little accident" that breaks a headlight could happen in a variety of ways which could potentially hurt the tranny, but the lack of damage would suggest it probably wasn't a big deal and probably wasn't the culprit in the tranny failure.
The fact that you just found out about this accident suggests there may be more to it than just a broken headlight. If we/you know more about the accident, the more clear it will become in determining whether or not it was a factor in your tranny failure. What parts in the tranny did your mechanic report as "broken", and how exactly were they broken (sheared, cracked, burnt, warped, etc)?
