I bought the Saab set shortly after I got my wagon in late 99.
Used them a couple times for skis. You will pay a gas mileage penmalty on the highway, more if you have a ski rack attached as the ski rack presnts an even larger flat surface sticking up than just the bars themselves. Don't leave them on full time.
You may want to lug a ladder now, you never know what you nmight need them for in the future.
OTOH--the PAIR of bars (and that includes all the mounting equipment, 4 matching locks) was way cheaper from my Saab dealer than going out and making a set from the equivalent Thule components.
IIRC, in late 99, the PAIR of bars was $102 from Saab, yet to assemble the Thule stuff from a store thnat carries Thule would have been about $160-$170. Oddly, the various Thuile add-ons are usually a little bit less at a sports shop with Thule.
