When I last priced a clutch, it was over 50% of the price of a compressor. I found the new compressor included a clutch. I found it easier to replced the compressor as I didn't feel I had the necessary experience or tools for the clutch replacement. I do have the gages and evucation pump, so I replaced the compressor.
However, just because a clutch doesn't engage may not necessaryily mean the compressor has failed. A/C systems have a low pressure cut-out switch to prevent compressor engagement when the system pressure drops below a certain point. If the freon leaked from around the compressor, that would indicat the seals may be defective in which case replacement would be warranted. There may be a power problem that prevents clutch engagement (wiring, relay).
I would hope your dealer did some troubleshooting before recommending replacment and I assume you are not operating under a warranty since you mention a cost to repair.
I would suggest getting a couple other "estimates" from reputable a/c repair shops. Saab dealers are not the end all for a/c problems. However, if your problem is one that involves the electrical system (i.e wiring, relays, etc), you may find these "other" shops reluctant to take on your problems in which case a good independant shop may be warranted. then
good luck
