The '01 cars came with boost gauges. A few other minor upgrades. I agree that the newer the car is, the fewer the bugs. The '99 had issues, and the '00 was better. The '01 was even better. Biggest changes came in '02 with the 5-speed automatic.
The V6 implies a SE, which tended to come fully equipped. There is confusion between the V6 in the 9-5 and the one in the 9000/NG900. Heck, I contributed to it a while back. Different engines. The older V6 had issues. It appears that the V6 in the 9-5 is pretty reliable - it may even have slightly fewer DI issues than the 4-cylinder. Yes, keep after the pulleys. However, the four-cylinder in both the 9000 and 9-5 (pretty similar) also need serpentine belt pulleys replaced around 60K. OK, don't need - just a good idea. And a broken serpentine belt won't bend valves - just strand, as in any car.
In the 9-5, I'd say that the V6 and the I-4 are pretty similar in terms of reliability. Go figure.
