We have an '01 2.3 automatic wagon that had the turbo replaced at 40K (bad oil seal in turbo). The DI failed without warning at 38K, the alternator got very noisy and was replaced at 40K and a number of the rubber bushings for the rear suspension replaced too. The SID is going to be replaced for the 2nd time soon (47K) and the A/C compressor is noisy. We've owned the car for the last 10K and so far our 9-5 has not been as trouble-free as I had expected. An extended warranty is on the horizon before the Saab 50K warranty expires soon.
I've had two 9000s - a '93 CDE and a 91 CD with 115K that I have now. The '93 9000 was sold because it was never very reliable and it was just too expensive to own. My '91 9000 has had the usual repairs but it is very solid even after my 18 year old son got through driving it for the last 18 months...
The 9-5 is a different car from the 9000 and I think it is better built too. It is more refined than the 9000, more comfortable, fast, and great to drive on a long, long trip. My wife really likes the 9-5 and I do too, but the 9000 has better seats (for me), gives me more road feel in the steering wheel and the car has more character. I don't expect it to be a Toyota but I do plan on running my '91 for as long as I can...
But, I would not let the comments on this BB related to the turbo and DI keep you out of the 9-5. This is one fine car to drive and you just deal with the "stuff" that may come with it. If you are concerned about repairs, consider getting an extended warranty.
