It is several reasons for why they dropped service items from the book.

Carmanufacturers have for years been competing in how "inexpensive" their car is to own and service. BMW was one of the first claiming 100K miles before the first scheduled service (if I remember correctly).

Fluids are getting better no doubt but if you are planning to keep the car for a long time it is never a bad idea to replace all fluids ones in awhile, not just the engine oil.

The coolant in your 2002 is a new style long life coolant that they claim should last 5 years or 150K miles. We will know some years from now if they were right or wrong?
Me personally, I'm not a big fan of "filled for life" or similar statements but would rather suggest to have the coolant replaced every 2 years or 30K miles.

The same goes for transmission oils and fluids. Saab have claimed the manual transmission being filled for life for decades now and we know it have not been so good for certain model/years.

The automatic transmission received a new type fluid from 2002 and now the auto is also "filled for life".

Volvo have been using the same type fluid from 2001 with not so good results so I strongly recommend to have the automatic transmission flushed at a regular interval, 30K miles.

If you think about it. You are aware of the different fluids but if a person that doesn't know calls a shop and ask for the price of a 60K service and one shop says $400.00 and the other say $700.00. It's easy to choose the cheaper one not realizing that they might not change all fluids.

For the same reason, an independant shop "might" be more expensive than the dealer on a 30 and 60 K service due to that the indy shop replaces more items and fluids that they feel are needed to keep the car running for longer than just after the factory warranty have expired.

Another trick that car manufacturers are using today is to spread the service items out over many smaller service intervals and calling them 10K, 15K, and 20K or whatever (or in Volvos case, 7.5K, 15K and so on).
That way they can charge you $150.00 to 250.00 for each visit even though it is more or less just an oil change and a little bit more that you get each time.
