I was driving to the airport to get to Detroit for the Ryder Cup (had tickets to play with the former captains) when suddenly lost power in the fast lane of a four lane highway. I had enough juice to slowly make it over to the right lane shoulder, but had to go over a mile to get to a safe spot. Thought I was going to be slammed by a procession of construction trucks screaming by me.
Smelled some burning plastic and could not get it over about 35 or 40 mph without seeing turbo burst go into red. About 30 seconds after the loss of power, CEL started flashing, then went out after about another 2 minutes, while power still low.
The only thing I can possibly think of as a warning was that I had noticed a little sluggishness for two days, the kind of thing that has come and gone before and resulted in either nothing done to car, once a spark plug replacement and twice a throttle body cleaning.
I have the V6 and have read here that it does provide you with some power in case of failure unlike the 4.
I also recall Swedecar writing that he has seen more V6 DIC failures. Very nice predictive.
I had it towed to local dealer they called today that it was the DIC and they replaced it and the spark plugs. I asked specifically about the catalytic converter and they said it was fine.
What should I ask them before I am satisfied--I don't have the time to take it back in now and I have read here that a few days later the CEL comes back on and it is something else affected by the DIC failure. Should they have replaced both of them?
BTW--had a 30K maintenance done about a month earlier.
2001 V6 29,000.
