Knock in steering and fumes in cabin - '99 9-5 wagon

My '99 9-5 wagon has 72k miles on it. Recently noticed a knocking (I can feel it in the steering wheel) when turning. Seems to be growing. Any suggestions?
Another knock - but different - is when reversing. After 10-40 feet (changes) there's an audible knock (also can be felt in the steering wheel). It occurs every time I back out of my driveway (up hill but not overly steep) for example. It seems to occur around the time I apply the brakes but I'm not sure on that.
Lastly, I have recently been smelling some exhaust in the cabin. Seems to be when I am in traffic - but not always. I believe setting the Climate Control system to recycle reduces the smell. I've read other posts that indicate a crack in a/some pipes and the exhausts are being pulled into the cabin. Sound like that is it? I don't remember the smell before and did not toggle the recycle button. Any suggestions?
