As a tire is used it goes thru the constant "heat up/cool down" cycles and gets harder as time goes by (the vulcanization process). So as more tread is worn, the harder the remaining treads gets, exacerbating problems like uneven wear patterns, alignment problems, and noise from coarse roads. A side detrement is reduce wet weather traction and longer braking distances.
I've heard from a few Saab techs that the cars tend to wear the outer edges quicker but beyond that I've never heard Saabs called "tire eaters".
There are a few tires on the market like some Bridgestone models that expose a softer tread as the tire wears. I think Michelin offers a few tires that have several tread types on one tire. But the vast majority of tires will simply get harder as they wear.
Don't feel too bad, though. 1st gen Infiniti Q45's are notorious tire eaters. Owners are lucky to get 20K out of any decent tire and enthusiasts regularly install new ones every 10-15K in order to maximize performance.
